On Sunday, April 11, a special event took place. The women's ministry of the church held a sale of crafts and baked goods to raise funds for the building project. The believers have always given towards the building project, both by special offerings and through regular giving like penny-a-day. But as the construction process has stretched into many years, completing it has sometimes seemed like a very far away dream.
In the past two years, so much has been accomplished on the building, bringing it close to completion and now people are really beginning to see this vision clearly again and the passion to see it come to fruition has been reignited.
The women's ministry has several groups that meet regularly to make crafts, most of which have been given as gifts to visitors. Recently, they decided to try something new and hold a crafts fair and sell the items so that they could raise funds to give toward the building. The ladies have set a goal of raising $1000 dollars (30,000 roubles) which is equivalent to 2 or 3 months salary for most people. It is a huge goal but they are so excited that they have a new way to contribute toward the final phases of completing the interior of the building.
The craft and bake sale was very popular. Both the ladies hosting the sale and the many eager buyers were well pleased with the results. It will take awhile to reach the goal, but it was a great start towards raising the funds and is a new and creative way for many people to be involved. I even got to participate- I didn't have any crafts to send, but made numerous loaves of banana bread, apple bread, carrot cake and apple butter to contribute to the sale. Another sale is planned for mid-May so the ladies are all busy preparing items for the next event! May God bless these ladies and the work of their hands and multiply the proceeds like the loaves and fishes that fed the 5,000!
I know the photos are not great- but it was difficult to get close enough to take pictures with all the crowd and rush around the tables. :)
